Male Psychologist Melbourne

A space for men to talk and find the support they need.

Care That Meets You Where You Are

Everyone goes through periods of poor mental health, whether it be stress, low mood, anxiety, or something you can’t even put your finger on. For many men, it can be hard to acknowledge these times, let alone reach out for support.

At Inner View Psychology, our team offers care tailored to men's mental health, helping you to understand what you're experiencing and build the tools to move forward. No matter what your life looks like, where you’re from, or what’s brought you to us, we want to support you in the way you need.

Supporting a Broad Range of Men’s Mental Health Concerns

Did you know that only 37% of men and boys reach out for support when they need it? While this may look like a good number, in reality, if 10 of your mates are struggling, only three or four of them are asking for the help they deserve.

For some, it may be because they are worried about the stigma of seeking support. In others, it may be because they don’t realise they can even ask for help.

The good news, though, is that reaching out for help as soon as you recognise problems may help more than you think. At Inner View Psychology, our psychologists are experienced in supporting a variety of mental health challenges, including:

⦿ Anxiety
⦿ Depression
⦿ Low self-esteem
⦿ Body image concerns
⦿ Emotional regulation
⦿ Anger management
⦿ Relationship difficulties
⦿ Life transitions
⦿ Grief and loss
⦿ Complex trauma

Grounded in Evidence-based Approaches

As fully trained psychologists, we often draw on a variety of evidence-based practices and therapeutic techniques, tailored to your needs. These may include:

Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT)

CBT explores the connection between thoughts, feelings, and behaviours, offering strategies to support behavioural change.

Schema Therapy

Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT)

ACT focuses on building strategies to accept anxiety, aiming to improve your experience with it rather than eliminate it.

Schema Therapy

Schema therapy aims to address long-standing patterns and beliefs, known as schemas, to help you better understand yourself and potentially overcome them.

Eye Movement and Desensitisation and Reprocessing (EMDR)

Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing aims to help people process distressing memories that feel unresolved, using guided eye movements.

MBT

Mentalisation-Based Therapy (MBT)

MBT focuses on building your capacity to understand your own thoughts and feelings, as well as those of the people around you.

Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT)

DBT combines acceptance and change-based strategies in an effort to help manage intense emotions and unhelpful patterns.

Animal Assisted Therapy

Animal-assisted therapy incorporates an animal into the therapeutic process to support connection, calm, and trust.

Common Questions About Counselling for Men

  • Can I request a male therapist?

While our team includes both male and female therapists, some clients feel more comfortable opening up to a male therapist. Let us know your preference when you reach out, and we'll do our best to match you accordingly.

  • What if I don't know what's wrong?

That's a completely normal place to start. You don't need a diagnosis or a clear explanation before booking. Many men come to us simply feeling off, and the first few sessions are often about making sense of what's going on together.

  • What can I expect in the therapy room?

Our therapy rooms are designed to feel like calm, private, non-judgemental spaces. There's no pressure to have everything figured out before you arrive.

Many men find it takes a session or two to feel comfortable enough to openly discuss what's really going on.

  • Why choose a practice with a particular interest in men's issues?

Men's issues often go unaddressed because general counselling doesn't always account for how men experience and express things differently from women.

Our practice has an interest in working with men, which means our approach is shaped around the ways stress, relationship challenges, and interpersonal difficulties tend to show up for men.
