EMDR Therapists That Meet You Where You Are

Not all difficult experiences are traumatic in the traditional sense, yet they can still have a lasting impact. Experiences such as loss, bullying, neglect, relationship difficulties, medical events or repeated criticism can become emotionally “stuck”, continuing to influence how you think, feel, and respond in the present.

At Inner View Psychology, we use EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitisation and Reprocessing) therapy to help reduce the distress associated with difficult memories, experiences, emotions, and beliefs. The goal is to help these experiences feel less overwhelming and to develop healthier, more balanced beliefs about yourself and the world.

Mental Health Concerns EMDR May Address

EMDR aims to help you process traumatic or painful memories and internal experiences (thoughts, emotions, sensations). Originally, it was developed to address PTSD (Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder), but is now also widely used to support people living with:

⦿ Anxiety
⦿ Depression
⦿ Personality disorders
⦿ Eating disorders
⦿ Phobias
⦿ Relationship issues

How EMDR May Help Bring Relief

EMDR is based on the Adaptive Information Processing (AIP) model, which proposes that the brain has a natural ability to process and integrate life experiences. When an experience is overwhelming, this process can become disrupted, leaving memories, emotions, physical sensations, and negative beliefs “stuck” in an unprocessed form.

During EMDR, bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements, tapping, or alternating tones) is used while briefly focusing on the distressing experience, helping the brain reprocess the information so that emotional distress is reduced and unhelpful beliefs are replaced with more adaptive and balanced beliefs.

A Closer Look at the EMDR Process

EMDR therapy is tailored to your individual experiences and goals. Although EMDR follows an established eight-phase framework, your psychologist will adapt the process to suit your needs, working at a pace that feels safe and manageable. Not every phase occurs in every session, and time spent in each phase varies depending on your circumstances.

Your EMDR sessions may include:

History and Formulation

Your psychologist works with you to identify past experiences that may be impacting you today. They will also help you to understand why you were more vulnerable to becoming stuck in the distressing experience.

Preparation

The EMDR process is explained, and you may learn some helpful techniques to prepare you. This phase ,differs between everyone and your therapist may suggest some additional intervention before beginning the next stage.

Assessment and Target Selection

Sometimes the experience you want to work on is obvious. Other times, particularly when difficulties stem from repeated experiences rather than a single event, it can take time to identify the memories, emotions and beliefs that will be the focus of EMDR. Once identified, these experiences are explored in a structured way to guide the processing.

Desensitisation

While focusing on aspects of the memory, bilateral stimulation is used to help the brain reprocess the experience. Over time, the memory typically becomes less emotionally distressing and less influential in the present.

Installation

As the emotional distress decreases, healthier and more adaptive beliefs are strengthened, helping the experience become integrated in a more balanced way.

Body Scan

You are guided to notice any remaining physical sensations associated with the memory, allowing any residual distress to be identified and processed.

Closure

Each session finishes with strategies to help you leave feeling grounded and emotionally settled, regardless of how much processing has occurred.

Reevaluation

At the beginning of the next session, you and your psychologist review any changes since the previous appointment and decide on the next focus of therapy.

Answering Your EMDR Questions

  • How is EMDR different from talk therapy like CBT?

Traditional talk therapies, such as cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT), primarily work through exploring thoughts, emotions and behaviours to create change. EMDR also involves talking with your psychologist, but during memory processing the emphasis shifts away from analysing the experience and towards helping the brain naturally reprocess distressing memories using bilateral stimulation.

For many people, this means they don’t need to repeatedly describe or relive painful experiences in detail, making EMDR feel like a more manageable way to work through difficult memories.

  • Can EMDR be combined with other therapies?

Yes. EMDR typically works well alongside other therapeutic approaches, including schema therapy, cognitive behaviour therapy, and dialectical behaviour therapy.

Your psychologist will work with you to help determine the combination of evidence-based practices that may be best for your individual needs and goals.

  • I'm not sure if what I've experienced counts as trauma. Can EMDR still help?

You don't need to have experienced a single defining traumatic event for EMDR to be relevant. Many people seek support for disturbing experiences, difficult relationships, childhood adversity, or loss that have had a lasting impact on their mental health.

If the past is affecting your life today, it's worth a conversation with our team.

  • How long does EMDR therapy take?

This varies depending on the nature and complexity of what you're working through. Some people notice a change in a relatively small number of sessions, while others with more complex histories or intense psychological distress may benefit from longer-term mental health support.
